They grow up so fast…

with one comment

Soon to be 16… and counting.

He’s started to plan his 16th birthday party.  I’m going out.

He’s reading the ICBC book for new drivers. *gulp*..  He does have a good teacher though.

He describes the virtues of lulu lemon pants.  Can’t argue with him.

It feels like yesterday I would tuck him into his crib.  I feel far too young to have a boy turning into a man.

I tell you one thing….it’s a hell of an experience.

I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Thinking ahead…

I’ve recently started playing chess with my 14 year old.  His record is 0-9? 0-10?  I should mention I’ve never been a parent to let kids win.  When they were 3 or 4, maybe.  sometimes.  but now?  no.  Earn it.  Yeah, I’m a meanie.  Though love.

Ethan often asks why he keeps losing.

I tell him .. “you need to plan your moves in advance in order to win.  You can’t pick your moves based on my moves and hope, somehow, magically, you’ll end up victorious in the end.  That isn’t how chess works.”

The same is true in life.

You can’t go day by day, reacting to everything that happens, and hope to win.  You need to look forward, plan accordingly, set your sights on what it is you want, what will make you happy, and work to it.  Reacting to everything will only end in loss.

Growing up, this is a lesson I learned the very hard way.  I’m pretty damn stubborn at times.  I would sell tomorrows comfort for todays enjoyment, making shortsighted decisions which took months, if not years, to remedy.  I’ve since grown out of this habit, for the most part… I am human after all.

Some temptations are just irresistable.

I’ve done more future thinking and planning since I hit 30, than I did in my entire life previously.  Just like the first time I ever beat my dad in chess…it feels great o see my work and planning come out the way I hoped.

Not Dwyane Johnson – I’ll admit to liking the first flick…but that is it!  I don’t have much wit left this evening.  That was it.  I’m spent.

Enjoy the picture.  See you tomorrow!

Let it snow, let it snow…make it Go!

I consider myself a Canadian through and through, but lord, do I hate the cold.  Yeah, I know.  I’m conflicted.  I bleed red and white.  I Cherish the game of hockey; yet greatly dislike Winter.

I will say though, it makes for much more dramatic environments to photograph – even if its cold and I’m standing between 4 lanes of traffic on a mound of snow.

Ah well – the rain is here, and there is always tomorrow!

This was posted on FB, had to share.  I didn’t write it, but did enjoy:

Chilled Vancouver commuters faced their second day of winter hell today, as an additional ¼ centimeter of the peculiar white stuff fell, bringing the lower mainland to its knees and causing millions of dollars worth of damage to the marijua……na crops. Scientists suspect that the substance is some form of frozen water particles and experts from Saskatchewan are being flown in. With temperatures dipping to the almost but not quite near zero mark, Vancouverites were warned to double insulate their lattes before venturing out.

Vancouver police recommended that people stay inside except for emergencies, such as running out of espresso or biscotti to see them through Vancouver ‘s most terrible storm to date. The local Canadian Tire reported that they had completely sold out of fur-lined sandals.

Drivers were cautioned to put their convertible tops up, and several have been shocked to learn that their SUV’s actually have four wheel drive, although most have no idea how to use it.

“The government has to do something,” snarled an angry Trevor Warburton. “I didn’t pay $850,000 for my one bedroom condo so I could sit around and be treated like someone from Toronto .”

Luke…

I am your father…

Movies have always been huge for me.  The first movie I remember seeing in a theatre was a double header;  Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars, Return of the Jedi.  I must have been 7? 8 years old and on my first ‘date’ with Jasmine.  I don’t know her last name, I wish I did.  I’d facebook her for sure.  See if she remembers me spilling the orange pop we bought from the concession stand to share during the flicks.  White shirt + Orange Pop = Bad combination.  Cut me some slack.  The counter was taller than I was at the time.  She still kissed me, so there!

Now, you may believe Star Wars is the definitive trilogy for me, but you’d be wrong.  My image to is indeed my homage to Darth, Yoda, Chewy, R2, C3P0 and the incestuous twins, Luke and Leia.  I recognize what Lucas did and applaud him for retaining merchandising rights; brilliant moves.  I do not,  however, recognize anything he’s done to that universe since .. say … 1985.  Jar-Jar is something Jacob two-two asks for when he wants Strawberry Jam.  That is all I have to say on that point.

To me, in my mind, the best series of movies of my generation, is the Lord of the Rings.  Count me in the group of folks who did NOT look forward to the theatrical release of Fellowship, but fell into the FanBoy camp by the time credits rolled.  If they made an Advent type chocolate calendar to count down the release of ‘The Two Towers’ – I would have fattened up like a turkey in September.

I’ll grant there were a few scenes (the last 25 minutes of Fellowship, for example), that ran a little long….and a few other scenes that made me seriously question Bilbo and Frodo’s sexuality, but all in all, the best series of movies I have seen in my life, and some amazing casting.  Serkis (Gollum) nailed his role completely.  So much so, that every time I see the man in person, all I see is Gollum.  I hope his wife doesn’t feel the same way….or maybe she does…and while laying in bed, for giggles, she plays with his hair and repeats ‘My precious…’ over..and over again.

Who knows, but it’s fun to imagine!

Until tomorrow!

A kiss.

A kiss can say hello.

A kiss can say goodbye.

A kiss can say, “I know it was you Fredo, you broke my heart”

A kiss can say “Thank you”

A kiss can say, “I’ll thank you later”

A kiss can say just about anything.

I share a kiss.

What does that say to you?

Two wheels..or Four?

with one comment

For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted a motorcycle.  Speed, power, agility, bikes are just sexy.  Open roads, blue sky, sun beaming down, wind roaring all around you.  Yeah, I could totally get into that.  The drive to Whistler, and through to Lillooet, past Clinton, would easily be a bike trip I would take.  As would the drive from Nanaimo to Tofino.  Both roads are straight out of video games.  (Mom, if you are reading this, I didn’t speed, uh, honest!).

Of course, those who know me have all suggested it may not be in my best interest TO own one.  Now, while I feel I’ve settled down and no longer pose a threat to myself, I still tend to agree…besides, frankly, I don’t trust a most BC drivers to watch out for me as it is.  People are crazy out there.  Doing makeup in the car, reading the paper, eating cereal out of bowls, reading maps; and combinations of all the above.  In rush hour.  While it rains.  Simply crazy.

I have far too much to live for, and quite enjoy the use of all my appendages, to ever get a bike.  I’ve made a deal with myself, and with Maggie.  One day, when we can afford it, we’ll get a roadster instead, and make that drive to whistler count!

As for two wheels…this will be as close as I get. And I’m ok with that.

Some time soon, expect some images of 4 wheels I’d like to make said drive in.

Until tomorrow.
